Funded by the World Bank, is supporting the establishment of market-driven incubation centers within eight university-based innovation hubs across eight countries, including Malawi, Mozambique, and Rwanda. This initiative aims to foster entrepreneurship and innovation by investing in approximately 30 high-potential startups, providing them with the necessary support to scale across East and Southern Africa.

In 2023 and 2024, Impact Gateway Africa, in partnership with FVS and with funding from the Visa Foundation through Afrilabs, implemented an Investor Readiness Program to support 50 women-led businesses in Kenya. The program aimed to equip these businesses with the skills and resources needed to access new markets, expand across borders, and compete for a grand prize of €10,000. By enhancing their investment readiness, the initiative helped women entrepreneurs strengthen their businesses, attract funding, and scale their impact regionally.

In 2025, Impact Gateway Africa played a key role in identifying and judging the Presidential Innovation Challenge and Awards. This prestigious event brought together innovators from all 47 counties in Kenya, showcasing ground-breaking solutions with the potential to transform industries, uplift communities, and shape the nation’s future.

Girls in STEM Impact Gateway Africa (IGA) is piloting an Entrepreneurship Challenge aimed at inspiring and empowering young girls to embrace STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), particularly within Kenya’s new school curriculum pathways. This initiative focuses on enhancing STEM education and innovation among girls, especially those from rural and low-income communities, by providing them with practical learning experiences, mentorship, and opportunities to explore STEM-related careers. Through this challenge, IGA is committed to bridging the gender gap in STEM and fostering the next generation of female innovators and entrepreneurs.

IGA, represented by Anne Lawi is leading the Joint Innovation Facility (JIF) is being developed as a dynamic innovative finance vehicle (fund) with potential tick size of € 100 to 200k conditional grants to scale impactful solutions focusing on digital transformation and green transition focusing on partnership between Africa and Europe. This is a project by Africa-Europe Digital Innovation Bridge” (AEDIB 2.0) of the EU, France, Germany, Finland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Belgium aims to strengthen digital transformation and the green transition in Africa through an enhanced partnership for digital entrepreneurship and innovation between Africa and Europe

In response to these dynamics, Seedstars in partnership with IGA and Agency for Business and Economic Development (AWE) is organizing cocreation during MiGA 2025. This workshop is designed to create joint business ventures and long-term partnerships between German and African stakeholders. The format blends co-creation, innovation thinking, and strategic collaboration exercises to align interests and catalyze scalable ventures. IGA leads the facilitation of the incubation process for the final eight businesses selected to participate in the Seedstars program, which is supported by the UN Environment Programme. This role involves providing tailored mentorship, technical assistance, and access to resources that help these businesses refine their solutions, strengthen their business models, and scale their environmental impact. Through a structured incubation journey, IGA ensures that the selected ventures are not only investment-ready but also aligned with sustainability goals, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to green innovation across the region.

Impact Gateway Africa (IGA) is currently implementing a World Bank-funded facility aimed at developing structured investment models for university-led incubators across eight African countries, including Malawi, Mozambique, Rwanda, and Uganda. The initiative seeks to strengthen the role of universities as innovation hubs by building sustainable frameworks that support entrepreneurship, research commercialization, and early-stage enterprise development. One of the most compelling aspects of this work is exploring how to effectively integrate the private sector into the innovation and commercialization pathways within universities. The project also focuses on creating enabling environments where innovation can thrive and scale ensuring that university-generated ideas are not only nurtured but also transformed into impactful, market-ready solutions with strong potential for growth.
